Mr. Hays is the President and Co-Founder of Copper Run, and oversees all client services and company operations. He has extensive experience in investment banking, accounting, and consulting. Mr. Hays has worked with hundreds of companies, both public and private, on various engagements.
Mr. Hays previously worked for, and helped found, CantorFitzgerald's investment banking group on Wall Street after 9/11. Cantor's investment banking group focused on capital market activities in the REIT and Oil & Gas Sectors, as well as administering up to $150 million of proprietary investments. Prior to Cantor, Mr. Hays worked for Ernst & Young inCleveland, working with companies in the business services, manufacturing, and technology areas. Mr. Hays has been involved in more than $7 billion of completed transactions during his career.
Mr. Hays is a Registered Investment Banking Representative, and holds the FINRA Series 7, 79, & 63 registrations. He has also successfully passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam and previously worked as a CPA. Mr. Hays has a bachelor’s degree in accounting (honors)and an MBA from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University.
Mr. Hays is a founding member and President of the Association for Corporate Growth - Columbus Chapter. He is also a Board member of The Entrepreneurship Institute and a member of the Aileron Center for Entrepreneurship and is passionate about helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses. Mr. Hays resides in Upper Arlington with his wife and their three sons and spends his free time with his family in the outdoors; golfing, traveling, boating, skiing, hunting, and fishing.
Mr. Shawn Byerly serves as Managing Director at Copper Run in the firm’s Cincinnati office. Shawn focuses his time on business development, where he is actively sourcing new buy-side and sell-side opportunities in the business services, distribution, and manufacturing sectors.
Shawn previously served as Managing Director of First Financial Bank’s (FFBC) Business Capital Group where he was responsible for business development, structuring and negotiating leveraged finance transactions, and maintaining client relationships. During his 10+ year tenure at First Financial, Shawn was responsible for originating and closing over 50 deals. Prior to First Financial, Shawn worked in a variety of credit and relationship management roles at Fifth Third Bank where he gained experience in a broad array of industry verticals.
Shawn holds BS in Business Administration from Franklin University. He is a member of Opus Connect and the Cincinnati chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth.
Mr. Chapman is a Partner and a co-founder of Copper Run, and oversees client services, business development and company operations. He focuses his time serving companies in the Consumer and Industrial, Technology and Business Services sectors. One area of focus is in the fire protection and alarm industry, where Mr. Chapman has completed over a dozen transactions.
Mr. Chapman has assisted in complex negotiations and has orchestrated numerous intricate deal structures, including cross-border transactions. He often assists business owners with succession planning and other advisory services. Mr. Chapman works on both sell-side and buy-side transactions.
Mr. Chapman was previously a senior portfolio manager for a hedge fund focused on both private and public investments. Mr. Chapman began his career with Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington, D.C. as a Senior Consultant on the IT Strategy Team. At Booz Allen, Mr. Chapman led his team on several high-profile projects for the Department of Defense and Department of Treasury.
Mr. Chapman holds a BS in Systems Engineering from The University of Virginia and an MBA in Finance from Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. He is a member of Association for Corporate Growth and NAFED (National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors).
Mr. Shaw is a Partner and Managing Director at Copper Run, and assists with both Sell Side and Buy Side assignments and business development. Mr. Shaw has experience evaluating the strategic and financial implications of M&A from smaller privately held companies up to $1 billion+ market capitalization companies.
Mr. Shaw most recently worked in Corporate Strategy and Development at Huntington Bancshares Inc. (NASDAQ: HBAN), a bank holding company headquartered in Columbus, OH. At Huntington, Michael’s primary focus was on mergers and acquisitions of potential bank targets as well as the evaluation of other strategic acquisition, divestiture and JV opportunities ranging in size from less than $10 million to greater than $1 billion.
Prior to Huntington, Michael helped co-found a medical device start-up. Also, he worked with a Columbus-area consulting firm where he helped underwrite advanced energy lending opportunities in Ohio in excess $50 million. Mr. Shaw’s career began at National City Corporation (now PNC Financial Group Inc.).
Mr. Shaw is a Registered Investment Banking Representative, and holds the FINRA Series 63 & 79 registrations. He is a Board member of The Entrepreneurship Institute, a member of the Association for Corporate Growth and a member of the Conway Center for Family Business.
Mr. Shaw holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance from Ohio University and an MBA from Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University with concentrations in Corporate Finance and Corporate Strategy. Mr. Shaw resides in Worthington with his wife.
Mr. Stevens is a Partner at Copper Run and is the Director of Energy Advisory. He has a unique background as both upstream operator and finance executive, which provides a first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing clients today. He is also president of Eureka Oil and Gas, a producer focused on the development of conventional crude oil. He has more than a decade of energy and finance experience, with an emphasis on valuation and deal structuring.
Previously, Mr. Stevens served as energy equity strategist and lead midstream and oil services analyst for Morningstar, and was Morningstar’s director of energy equity research. In this capacity he led research efforts focusing on global crude oil supply and demand, North American crude oil and natural gas differentials, U.S. natural gas supply and demand, and shale economics.
A native Texan, Mr. Stevens holds a master's degree in international management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, a master's degree in business administration with a finance concentration from the University of Houston, and a bachelor of arts from St. John's College, where he studied philosophy and mathematics.
